Use of Mobile Devices

The Borough of Harrow Swimming Club (BHSC) acknowledges that mobile phones, text messaging, email and other forms of electronic communication are now widely used within daily life.

The aim of this policy is to promote safe and appropriate practice by establishing clear guidelines for acceptable use of mobile phones and other handheld devices in accordance with Swim England guidelines, which were significantly updated and changed in January 2024 as part of the new version of Wavepower (Swim England’s safeguarding policy and procedures document).

Mobile devices have become an everyday part of life. They have evolved in such a way that a vast majority of our day-to-day activities rely on them. However, that doesn’t mean they should be used in all settings and environments.

There is a time and place for mobiles – but Swim England vehemently believe a swimming pool changing room isn’t one of them.

That is why their updated version of Wavepower prohibits the use of mobile devices in changing rooms during Swim England regulated activity. This is to help protect our members and is fully supported by the committee of The Borough of Harrow Swimming Club.

There may be some exceptional circumstances when the use of a mobile phone in a changing room is required. Common sense must prevail and in an emergency situation, it would obviously be totally appropriate to use a mobile to call for help.

Keeping them tucked away in a bag and out of sight will ensure everyone feels safer so we’re asking all our swimmers to please resist the temptation to send a text, check your social media or make a call until you’re out of the changing room.

Misuse of these devises can cause immense distress and upset to individuals which may impact their health and self-confidence.
