We are thrilled to share that Mia Garner, a dedicated member of our Performance Squad, was selected by the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) to represent England at the 2025 ISF Gymnasiade Under-15 World School Games, held in Zlatibor, Serbia, from 5th to 12th April. The ESSA delegation comprised 31 of England’s top swimmers aged 15 and under, including 7 para-swimmers, chosen for their outstanding ability and consistent performances. Mia’s inclusion in this prestigious squad is a testament to her dedication, talent, and remarkable progress in the sport. Founded in 1974, the ISF Gymnasiade is one of the world’s premier multi-sport events for school-aged athletes, featuring 22 disciplines and drawing nearly 4,000 participants globally. The event alternates annually between U15 and U18 editions, offering young athletes the chance to compete at an elite international level and forge lifelong connections with peers from around the world. This year’s swimming competition saw 223 swimmers—109 girls and 114 boys—from a diverse array of countries including Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Brazil, Chile, China, Croatia, India, Macao, Mexico, Bosnia, Serbia, Taipei, Thailand, Turkey, the UAE, Ukraine, and the USA. Despite fierce competition and the challenges of racing in a new environment, every member of Team England rose to the occasion—many of them making their international debuts. Mia swam exceptionally well, delivering short course personal bests in all three of her backstroke events. Although she was ineligible to progress to the finals due to the rule limiting participation to two swimmers per country per final, her performances were a source of great pride. Team England’s swimmers dominated the pool from the outset, maintaining their position at the top of the medal table throughout the meet. This was no easy task, given the strength of teams from Brazil, Thailand, Mexico, Serbia, Ukraine, and the USA—with Brazil, in particular, proving formidable contenders and eventually winning the overall Gymnasiade. Nonetheless, England’s swimmers consistently delivered stunning performances, ensuring the competition remained fierce until the final races. Beyond the medals, the trip provided an incredible opportunity for personal growth. Representing their country on the international stage, the athletes had to adapt to competing abroad for the first time—away from family, familiar coaches, and routines. They forged strong bonds with teammates from across the country and made lasting friendships with athletes from around the globe (not to mention swapping kit, which was clearly a highlight!). We are immensely proud of Mia for her performance, resilience, and spirit. We hope this marks just the beginning of a long and successful international career. |
